I don’t need to tell you this - but we are called to be on a journey that helps us to better understand who we are as God’s creation and to follow the Son of God, in that journey.

In other words - we are called to follow Jesus.  God loves us so deeply that God was willing to live as a human so that we might have a way to understand how we can live for the greater good of the world.  How we might be able to be living examples of God’s work in the world through Jesus.

And while that all sounds nice and pretty, I cannot imagine that it was, or is.  As we walk through our lives in 2022 with the anxiety of sickness and separation, and having to be constantly and consistently on the lookout for how to care for ourselves and one another - maybe we have a better point of view.  I don’t think it was easy to live in the Jewish culture during the Roman occupation.  But I do think that Jesus was able to be a word of hope in the world, and I do think that he found a way to teach people to care for one another, which made life not only bearable - but hopeful.

Here’s the real grace in the message (of living in Hope) - God uses us even when we are a mess, no matter how damaged we are….God washes away our sins, allowing us to continue in life in a way -  as some theologians might say -  “Walking wet” -  in our forgiveness, in our Baptism.  It is a statement that we know our faults and we know that we are still loved…

You are loved - let that love be a light to guide you in this time of Epiphany - the season of light.

Peace,
Pastor Erin
