"All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." — Acts 2:4
Have you ever noticed that the first thing we do when we arrive in the world is breathe? We do not speak right away.
We do not declare our purpose. The first thing we are driven to do is breathe. Before we can even make a sound.
It is, in a way, a reminder to us that the Spirit - that same holy, rushing wind that filled the room on the day of Pentecost - who has been breathing life into God's people since the very beginning, also known as Ruach. The Hebrew word for Spirit, which also means breath or wind. The exhale of God.
When the disciples gathered in that upper room, they were not waiting with polished sermons or prepared remarks. They were simply present. And the Spirit filled them. They did not have everything figured out, but they had shown up and made space for the spirit in their lives
And as they moved in the presence of the Spirit something remarkable happened. They opened their mouths, and the Spirit did the rest.
That is still how it works.
There are days in ministry when we do not have the words. When the grief in the room is too heavy, when the division feels too wide, when your own tank is running low. On those days, beloved, breathe. Inhale the presence of the One who called you. Trust that the same Spirit who lit tongues of fire over ordinary heads in an ordinary room is still filling, still speaking, still moving - in you and through you.
You don't have to manufacture the wind. You just have to open the window.
Reflect: Where in your life right now do you need to stop striving and simply breathe - making room for the Spirit to speak through you?
Pray: Holy Spirit, fill me fresh today. Where I am empty, pour in. Where I am afraid, speak through me. I offer you my breath, my voice, and my yes.
Amen.
